Elegance reflected at the 2011 Canon Gold Cup "Super Saturday"

Despite the change of date as a result of the extended rainfall in the past week, Greyville racecourse was a hive of activity with punters and socialites lapping up a glorious sun-filled day at the 2011 Canon Gold Cup "Super Saturday".

The popular Best Dressed Person Competition afforded racegoers with a tasteful selection of golden delights each uniquely designed to fit this year's fashion theme "Sunrise, Sunset". Judges Zwai Gumede of the label Nguni Shades, Toti designer Madelain Clark and fashion programme director Tiffany Prior had the difficult task of selecting a winner in each fashion competition.

"This year we have seen some outstanding garments and each designer has interpreted this broad theme in very unique manner," said Prior. The competition was won by local design Ludwig Bezuidenhout, followed by Brenda Quin in second and Brenda Waring in third.

"When I began my design I looked at how young children draw the sun," explained Bezuidenhout. "They just go round and round in circles, hence the many layers in the base of my skirt." Bezuidenhout spent dedicated time completing his garment and is ecstatic that his work has been recognised.

Bezuidenhout walked away with R3000 from Gold Circle, a Canon Powershot SX210 IS Digital Camera and a Huawei IDEOS Handset.

This year Gold Circle also invited ten local designers to provide a garment that best describes their interpretation of this year’s fashion theme. The designers were Brenda Quin, Claire McKenzie, Karen Monk Klijnstra, Kathrin Kidger, Madelain Clark, Nguni Shades, Pregasen Govender, Rizwana Singh, Sibu Msimang and Terrence Bray.

“I think our ten invited designers have summed up the spirit of the Canon Gold Cup “Super Saturday” and have each approached the theme in a very unique way,” said Prior.

Off the course the fifteen marquees provided a fun-filled day at the races, each taking advantage of Gold Circle's generous offer of providing a basic hospitality set up which would be used to on sell hospitality to the public and in return becoming an essential fundraiser for an organisation.
