Preview to the 2011 Canon
Gold Cup "Super Saturday"
As the weather shows signs of returning to normal winter expectations,
attention refocuses on “Super Saturday” the All-Star climax of Champions
Season and the running of the Canon Gold Cup at Greyville.
The
raceday, with over R3 million in stakes to be paid to deserving owners,
affords racegoers with the rare opportunity to view four grade one races
at one racemeeting; the Canon Gold Cup, the Thekwini Stakes, the Premier’s
Champion Stakes and the Champions Cup.
First run in 1921, the Canon Gold Cup, which now headlines the spectacular
“Super Saturday”, has become known as a day for Gold Circle to give back
to its supporters after a vibrant racing season.
Gold Circle will once again host fifteen recognised charities and
fundraising organisations, giving them a chance to generate funds by
providing them each with a marquee, tables and chairs and the opportunity
to create a hospitality areas to on-sell to the public.
“At the end of a fantastic racing year it has become an important avenue
for us to put something back into the community after all the support we
have received throughout the year and particularly during Champions
Season,” said Gold Circle Event Marketing Manager, Ken Tweddell.
The fundraisers included are: Castle Hill Primary School, Child Welfare
Chatsworth, DAFTA Durban Association for the Aged, Gift To The Needy,
Kharwastan Secondary School, KZN Baseball Association / Quarry Outreach,
KZN Blind and Deaf Society, KZN Society for the Blind, Lions Club of
Westville and Queensburgh, Phoenix Child Welfare, Phoenix Community
Hospice, Rotary Club of Chatsworth, S. Dass School/PESCO, Verulam Child
Welfare and Woodview Primary School.
This year racegoers can expect a splash of fashion competition entrants
each reflecting the “Sunrise, Sunset” fashion theme, parading the track
with high hopes of being noticed by the judges and media.
The Best Dressed Person Competition is open to anyone who has a flair for
fashion. The winner will receive R3000 from Gold Circle, a Canon Powershot
SX210 IS Digital Camera and a Huawei IDEOS Handset. Judges begin scouting
for finalists on track near the winning post from 11h00 on raceday.
This year Gold Circle has also invited ten local designers to provide a
garment that best describes their interpretation of this year’s fashion
theme. The designers are Brenda Quin, Claire McKenzie, Karen Monk
Klijnstra, Kathrin Kidger, Madelain Clark, Nguni Shades, Pregasen
Govender, Rizwana Singh, Sibu Msimang and Terrence Bray.
Limited hospitality is still available. Visit the website on
www.canongoldcup.co.za for further information. The Canon Gold Cup "Super
Saturday" takes place at Greyville Racecourse on Saturday 30 July.
